In the Fontan report, you get a taste of the uniquely readable explanations of complex heart
conditions written by Dr.Sivasubramanian, a specialist heart surgeon. Dr. Sivasubramanian was Assistant
Professor of Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for
Sick Children in India, and has written extensively about birth defects of the heart. To read more of his articles on heart disease, you can visit these websites :
As if you didn't know ! Most doctors enjoy speaking a highly technical language, using scary medical jargon to explain things to anxious and worried parents. It adds to their aura of mystery and magic. But not this doctor ! He believes that explanations must EXPLAIN, writings must BE READ, teaching must EDUCATE. Dr.Sivasubramanian makes things EASY TO UNDERSTAND. But why is he doing this ? Well, frankly, it's because he, like you, believes that we are not getting our due, not being involved enough in the treatment planning and decision making about a person very very important to us - our child. We spend a ridiculous amount of time hunting for information, researching medical journals, visiting libraries, surfing the Net, trying to take a crash course in medicine in order to make some sense out of medical literature. Does the following passage make sense to you ...........?
Or does Dr.Siva's interpretation of the same ?
Here's what Dr.Sivasubramanian himself has to say about his Fontan report: Friday, January 22nd, 2003 Dear Friend: If your child, or someone you know and love, has had the Fontan operation or one of its modifications, you need more information. The report titled "After the Fontan" covers all three categories of the Fontan operation - early and late survival after the Fontan, quality of life issues and complications of a Fontan procedure. It applies to all conditions for which a Fontan operation is done - tricuspid atresia, pulmonary
atresia, HLHS, single ventricle and others. It doesn't matter why your child had a Fontan, the
results explained in the report are relevant to all - and throw up many pleasant surprises !
"Your Fontan report was well written and very easy to understand. Many of our family members are interested in reading it as well and those who have comment on the way it has been written. My compliments to you for writing this. I look forward to reading more of your articles and your new book. Thank you, Dr.." -- Carolyn Keefe"My wife and I found the report very useful. Our son will have the Fontan surgery shortly. As parents, we are particularly concerned over his future limitations, quality of life, etc. Your report helped address some of those fears........You presented the data in an easy to understand manner that allowed my wife too to read the report on her own. Thank you, Dr.Siva." -- Randy & Kim Sittner"Dr., I did find your report on the After the Fontan very useful and easy to read. My son has not had the Fontan yet but we know it is in his future and this report gives me great hope for his future. I don't think I'd change a thing and thank you so much for writing it!" -- Teresa Dysert"Dear Dr.Sivasubramanian Your Fontan report was helpful. I would like to share parts of it with my family and friends to help them in understanding the physiology of what has taken place." -- Cara Highsmith"I've been starved for information -- you have provided me with the most complete and correct explanations I've found so far." -- Kayla"I must express my deepest appreciation for your efforts in aiding parents facing a difficult situation such as myself. Our child has been diagnosed with tricuspid atresia. Your report is invaluable in helping us to understand both the short and long term consequences of this defect. God bless and thanks," -- Julian Fleniken"It is very informative. We have been unable to find such details in any other source that we wanted to know before our daughter has the operation. I believe you report answered all of our questions. Thank you" -- Jamie"IT HAS ANSWERED A LOT OF QUESTIONS. I KNOW MY DAUGTHER WILL ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS WHEN SHE GETS OLDER AND I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE HER THE INFO AND SHE CAN READ IT AND SAVE IT FOR HERSELF. THANK YOU" -- SHARON
But this is what I find to be the most exciting part......
I look forward to getting a letter or e-mail from you, telling me about your child's Fontan operation, and whether the information in the report was useful in helping relieve your anxiety, understanding the long term prospects and problems better, and in asking your doctor relevant questions about your child's future. Even though I get an enormous amount of mail, keep the letters coming, I love to hear your stories and unique experiences ! Sincerely, Dr.Sivasubramanian
